چکیده

Much of Africa has yet to go through a demographic transition; this Malthusian crisis of high mortality, high fertility, rapid population growth and chronic extreme poverty has been attributed to factors including the status of women, pro-natalist policies, and poverty itself. Large uncertainty exists among demographers as to the relative importance of these factors, mostly since econometric estimation is complicated by the endogeneity of fertility to other variables of interest. We attempt to improve estimation of the e ect of the child mortality variable on fertility by deploying exogenous variation in the ecology of malaria transmission. Results show that child mortality is a powerfully robust driver of fertility behavior. Meeting the Millennium Development Goal of reducing 1990 child mortality rates by 66% in sub-Saharan Africa would translate into a reduction of total fertility rates from around 6.3 in 1990 to 4.5 (holding other fertility drivers constant), around halfway towards achieving replacement fertility levels of 2.1.

Nber Working Paper Series Africa's Lagging Demographic Transition: Evidence from Exogenous Impacts of Malaria Ecology and Agricultural Technology

Much of Africa has not yet gone through a "demographic transition" to reduced mortality and fertility rates. The fact that the continent's countries remain mired in a Malthusian crisis of high mortality, high fertility, and rapid population growth (with an accompanying state of chronic extreme poverty) has been attributed to many factors ranging from the status of women, pro-natalist policies, ...

Human Capital, Mortality and Fertility: A Unified Theory of the Economic and Demographic Transition

Human Capital, Mortality and Fertility: A Unified Theory of the Economic and Demographic Transition This paper provides a unified theory of the economic and demographic transition. Individuals make optimal decisions about fertility, education of their children and the type and intensity of the investments in their own education. These decisions are affected by different dimensions of mortality ...

BACKGROUND NOTE ON METHODOLOGY FOR UNDER-FIVE MORTALITY ESTIMATION Background and Inter-Agency work Global estimates on under-five mortality are produced on a yearly basis by the Inter-agency Group for Child Mortality

Global estimates on under-five mortality are produced on a yearly basis by the Inter-agency Group for Child Mortality Estimation, which includes UNICEF, WHO, The World Bank, UN Population Division, Harvard University and others. The Interagency group was created in 2004 to share data and ensure consistency among the estimates previously produced separately by UNICEF, WHO and The World Bank. Sin...

Uncertain Child Survival and Fertility: The Effects of Child Morbidity and Mortality

This paper analyzes the response of fertility and human capital investment to changes in childhood disease burden. Unlike previous child mortality-fertility studies, it focuses on disease-related mortality and distinguishes between disease morbidity and mortality. When child survival is uncertain, a fall in childhood disease burden may lower or raise total fertility in contrast to the unambiguo...

The life-history trade-off between fertility and child survival

Evolutionary models of human reproduction argue that variation in fertility can be understood as the local optimization of a life-history trade-off between offspring quantity and 'quality'. Child survival is a fundamental dimension of quality in these models as early-life mortality represents a crucial selective bottleneck in human evolution. This perspective is well-rehearsed, but current lite...
